Julia McPhee (formerly Julia Bergofsky) enters her fifth season at the helm of the Wellesley Lacrosse program. In four years, McPhee has amassed a record of 40-31 and was named the 2009 NEWMAC Coach of the Year. She’s led the Blue to the NEWMAC Championship game twice and in 2006, she coached the team to only the fourth 13-win season in program history.
McPhee came to Wellesley from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, where she served as the Head Lacrosse Coach for one season. At Goucher, she led the Gophers to a 9-7 season and a top-20 ranking in Division III. McPhee also served as the coordinator for the Goucher College Student Athlete Mentor (SAM) Program.
Prior to her time at Goucher, McPhee was a graduate assistant for lacrosse and field hockey at Trinity College, where she received her Master of Arts in Public Policy in 2004.
A 2002 graduate of Middlebury College and the 2002 Division III Honda Broderick Award Winner, McPhee led the Panthers to three NCAA National Championships. In addition to earning the Honda Award, McPhee was named the IWLCA Midfield Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002. A two-time IWLCA 1st Team All-American and two-time 1st Team All-NESCAC honoree, McPhee garnered ECAC Player of the Year and NESCAC Player of the Year honors during her senior season. She was also a three-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection and the 2002 NCAA Tournament MVP.
McPhee also serves as an Assistant Professor of Physical Education at Wellesley and teaches in the required physical education program. A graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy (Denver, 2007), McPhee is an active member of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She serves as the chair of the IWLCA Berkshire Regional All-American Committee and is a member of the National All-American Committee. Additionally, McPhee is a member of the NCAA Regional Ranking Committee and the IWLCA North/South All-Star Game Committee. Most recently, McPhee presented at the 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention giving a talk entitled, “Be A Threat: Basic 7v7 Attacking Principles.”
