Wellesley Fall Student-Athletes Named NEWMAC All-Academic
BABSON PARK, Mass. - The New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has named thirteen Wellesley College student-athletes to the 2009 Academic All-Conference Team. Wellesley cross country and soccer led the way with four honorees each, while tennis and volleyball had two representatives and field hockey, one.
From the soccer team, Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA), Jennie Krasker (Newton, MA), Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA), and Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) received the honor. Caruso, a senior Biological Sciences major with a Psychology minor, is a three-time recipient of the award. Krasker, a junior Psychology major, also received the academic honor in 2008. Gray and Roy are both undeclared sophomores receiving the award for the first time.
Cross Country was represented by Clare Egan (Stuart, FL), Mia Howard (Bloomington, MN), Cailey Stevens (Kodiak, AK) and Amy Wolkin (Atlanta, GA). Egan is a senior Peace and Justice studies major. Howard, Stevens, and Wolkin are sophomores who have not yet declared their majors. All four runners are first-time recipients of the honor.
Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) and Stephanie Chu (Hilo, HI). Herman, a junior Economics and Environmental studies major, is a two-time recipient of the award. She was also named to the All-NEWMAC team for the second year in a row for her athletic achievements this season. Chu, a sophomore, is a first-time award recipient with an undeclared major.
The volleyball team saw Madeleine Brumley (Lafayette, LA) and Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, FL) receive the academic honor. Brumley is a junior Peace and Justice studies major picking up her second honor. Cummings, a senior, is majoring in Economics and Mathematics. She is a three-time academic award recipient and was named the NEWMAC Player of the Year for her athletic accomplishments this season.
Whitney Reid (Bensalem, PA) is the field hockey team's honoree. Reid, a sophomore who has not yet declared a major, is a first time Academic All-Conference selection.
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2008 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 10 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
