Wellesley College Swimmers Named NEWMAC All-Academic

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has named eight Wellesley College student-athletes to the 2010 Winter Academic All-Conference Team.  Wellesley swimmers owned all eight honors, as the team garnered the second-most awards in the conference, behind only MIT with 10 athletes honored.

Making their third-straight appearances on the All-Academic squad are Blue seniors Emilie Mitten (Norwalk, CT) and Alex Stark (Moorestown, NJ).  Mitten is a Biological Sciences major with an Economics minor, who is a three-time Seven Sisters All-Tournament Selection.  Academically, she was a junior elect in Phi Beta Kappa and took home Excellence in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Deparment Awards.  Stark is an International Relations and Political Science major with a minor in Middle Eastern Studies.  Earlier this year, she was named an Albright Fellow, participating in the Madeleine Korbel Albright Institute for Global Affairs.

Wellesley fifth-year Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IN), who is completing the teaching certification program, is also a three-time Academic All-Conference selection.  A French, International Relations and Economics major she is also a two-time NCAA competitor and a three-time Academic All-American. Senior Abigail Friedman (Bristow, VA), earns her second-straight All-Academic nod.  She is a double major in American Studies and Peace and Justice Studies who swam fly events for the Blue.

Wellesley also had four first-time recipients of the honor in senior Laurie Adamson (Silver Spring, MD) and sophomores Olivia Hulme (Alma, MI), Melanie Kaplan (La Jolla, CA) and Allison Yee (Cupertino, CA). Adamson joined the team this season as a diver and will graduate with a double major in Africana Studies and English.  Hulme, who swims free and fly events for the Blue, is secretary of Wellesley's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has yet to declare a major.  Kaplan, a free/back swimmer for Wellesley is a Latin American Studies major, while Yee, who swims the breast stroke, majors in Chemistry, as well as Chinese Language and Literature.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2009 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 10 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
