Wellesley Spring Student-Athletes Named NEWMAC All-Academic
Babson Park, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its 2009 Spring Sport Academic All-Conference Teams this week. Seven Wellesley student-athletes earned nominations this season.
Crew places four on the All-Academic roster. Seniors Jacqueline Lewandowski (Chicago, IL) and Adrienne Topic (Danville, CA), junior Kate Spelman (Scituate, MA) and sophomore Lauren Baker (Bedford, NH) all received the honor. Lewandowski, a Classical Civilization major, makes her third straight appearance on the All-Academic team. Topic, who is majoring in Biological Chemistry, also earned the award for the third time in her career. Spelman, an Art History major, makes her second All-Academic appearance, while coxswain Baker, an Economics major, is a first time recipient of the award.
Representing the softball team were junior Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA) and sophomore Megan Townsend (Saline, MI). This is the second Academic All-Conference award for Orloff, an economics and mathematics major. Townsend, a biology major, earns the honor for the first time.
Alexis Fischer (Orinda, CA), a member of the lacrosse team, earns her second-straight Academic All-Conference Award. The junior is a Biology major.
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2008 fall semester; achieved second-year academic status at her institution; and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 10 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
