Box Score
WELLESLEY, MA – Senior Jordan Akerley’s (Gilford, NH) goal three minutes and forty-one seconds into the game proved to be the game-winner as the Wellesley College soccer team downed Bates College 1-0 in a Thursday afternoon, non-conference game at Wellesley.
Just under four-minutes into the game, Akerley launched a shot that Bates goalie Nini Spalding deflected. However, Akerley was in position to knock the rebound into the far left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
After the goal, Bates dominated the rest of the first half, outshooting Wellesley 11-1, but the Blue played tight defense to keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.
The game remained scoreless through the second half with Bates' best chance to get on the board coming in the 82nd minute. After a corner kick from Molly Wagner, Elise Kornack took a shot from ten yards out that Blue goalie Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) knocked away. A few seconds later, Martore saved an attempt from Ali Emery to keep the Wellesley lead. After another corner kick from Bates, Julie Brown’s shot hit the high post to end the threat.
Martore finished the game with nine saves while Bates' Spalding stopped three shots.
The loss drops Bates to 1-1 on the season. The Bobcats will next host Amherst on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
With the win, Wellesley moves to 2-1-1 on the season. Next up for the Blue, Framingham State College comes into town on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start.
