Wellesley College Soccer Wins 6-1 Over Coast Guard

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – A balanced offensive attack led the Wellesley College soccer team to a 6-1 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener for both teams.

Wellesley started the scoring early when Jennie Krasker (Newton, MA) put a pass from Courtney Callahan (Scottsdale, AZ) into the back of the net for a 1-0 Blue lead just one minute into the game.

Coast Guard had an opportunity to score 14 minutes into the first period when Meridith Palo broke away but her shot attempt was stopped by Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA). Wellesley quickly moved the ball back down the field where Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) broke free and knocked in her first goal of the season to put Wellesley ahead 2-0.

The Blue pushed their lead to 3-0 at the 18-minute mark when Krasker netted her second goal of the game, this time on an assist from Geller.

Wellesley threatened again, just before the end of the half, but Coast Guard goalkeeper Trish Ohle was able to make two saves to keep the Blue lead at 3-0 going into halftime.
To open the second period, Wellesley’s Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) broke away and hit Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, HI) with a pass over the middle. Lau knocked the ball past Ohle to put the Blue up 4-0 with 40 minutes to play.

In the 62nd minute, Wellesley took a 5-0 lead on a goal from Deirdre Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) that was assisted by Lorretta White (Northampton, MA). Two minutes later, the Blue rounded out their scoring with Lau’s second goal of the game.

Down 6-0, Coast Guard controlled the ball over the last ten minutes of the game. The Bears launched two shots that Wellesley goalie Samantha Littlejohn (Dayton, NJ) saved before netting their first goal of the contest on a shot by Katie Ustler. The goal moved the score to 6-1 where it would stay as time expired.

In goal for Coast Guard (1-6, 0-1 NEWMAC), Ohle saved eight shots. The Bears will next travel to Connecticut College for a 4:00 p.m. match on Tuesday.

For Wellesley (4-2-1, 1-0 NEWMAC), Lau and Krasker each netted two goals apiece while Geller added a goal and an assist. In goal for the Blue, Martore and Littlejohn split time with Martore picking up three saves while Littlejohn stopped two.

Wellesley will next be in action on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match-up at UMass-Dartmouth.
