Wellesley College Soccer Takes Wellesley Invitational Title

Box Score

WELLESLEY, MA – Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) saved nine shots for Wellesley College as the Blue played to a scoreless tie in the championship game of the Wellesley Invitational against Montclair State University.  Wellesley was awarded the tournament title after besting the Red Hawks 3-1 in a shootout.

Martore picked up three saves in the first half ruining all three Montclair State attempts to score. Wellesley’s best chance to get on the board in the period came in the 25th minute when first-year Jennie Krasker’s (Newton, MA) shot went high.

In the second half, Montclair State out-shot Wellesley 11-3 with Martore saving five shots for the Blue.

Neither team managed any scoring in two overtime periods as the game ended in a scoreless tie.  Wellesley then won the Wellesley Invitational title with a 3-1 advantage in a shootout where Martore made a diving save on the last Montclair State attempt.  For her efforts, she was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

With the tie, Montclair State moves to 1-2-1 on the season while Wellesley moves to 1-1-1. The Blue will be back in action on Thursday, with a 4:00 p.m. home contest against Bates College.
