Wellesley College Downs Smith in Double Overtime

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Jennie Krasker (Newton, MA) scored the game-winning goal one minute and 34 seconds into the second overtime as Wellesley College defeated Smith College 2-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up.
After a scoreless first half in which Wellesley held a 9-3 advantage in shots, the Blue got on the board in the 65th minute when Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) scored from 30-yards away on a shot that was just over the head of Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH).
In the 80th-minute, the Pioneers nearly tied it after a scrum in front of the Wellesley net brought Wellesley goalie Katie Matore (Great Falls, VA) out in front. However, Alexander Eccard’s (Los Angeles, CA) shot was knocked away by Loretta White (Northampton, MA) and Wellesley retained the lead.
Smith answered back with strong pressure to the Wellesley offense and with just under eight minutes to play in the game, Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) took a pass from Nicole Widger (Clarksville, MD) and put it into the right-hand corner of the net to knot the game at 1-1.
The Blue launched three shots in the last four minutes of regulation, but Bachtel held strong with two saves and the game was sent into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Wellesley out-shot the Pioneers 2-1 but neither team was able to convert. In the second overtime period, Krasker’s goal at 101:26 gave Wellesley the win.
Both Smith’s Bachtel and Wellesley’s Martore finished the game with six saves.
The loss drops Smith to 5-9-1 overall and 4-5 in NEWMAC play while Wellesley improves to 7-7-2 and 3-5-1 in the NEWMAC. Both the Pioneers and the Blue look ahead to the NEWMAC playoffs with the first round beginning on Saturday, October 27.
