Caruso Leads Wellesley to OT Win Over UMass Dartmouth

WELLESLEY, MA – Sophomore Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period as the Wellesley College soccer team downed UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference match-up in Wellesley.
The Corsairs struck first with a goal by leading scorer Sarah Killingbeck (Norton, MA) in the 23rd minute that gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead that they’d hold going into halftime.
Wellesley goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) kept the Blue in the game as UMass Dartmouth opened the second period with three shots on goal. Martore made three saves and the score remained 1-1 with 35 minutes to play.
At the 57-minute mark, Caruso broke free on the left side and launched a shot that knotted the score at 1-1 for her second goal of the season. Over the final 13 minutes of regulation, Martore and Corsair’s keeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA) saved one shot attempt apiece and the game was sent into overtime.
Wellesley dominated the first overtime period, launching five shots to UMass Dartmouth’s none, but Braga made three saves to keep the score at 1-1 as time expired in the first overtime.
Three minutes and seven seconds into the second overtime, Caruso launched the game-winner into the right side of the net and Wellesley won 2-1.
For the Corsairs, Braga finished with five saves. UMass Dartmouth moves to 4-4-1 on the season and will next play at UMass Boston on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
With the win, Wellesley improves to 5-2-1 on the season. Next up for the Blue, the team travels to Clark University for a NEWMAC match-up on Saturday at 11:00AM.
