Wellesley College Soccer Falls to WPI
Box Score
Worcester, MA -- Forward Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) established a new WPI single season scoring record and Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, MA) posted her first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over visiting Wellesley in NEWMAC women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Engineers improve their record to 6-5 (2-1 NEWMAC) while the Blue dip to 5-4-1 (1-2 NEWMAC) on the season. The victory was the first for the Crimson and Gray over Wellesley since the 2004 season.
After a scoreless half of play, WPI got on the board in the 52nd minute when Liz Tuite (Hopkinton, MA) booted a corner kick that was headed into the net by Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA) for her fourth goal of the season.
The Engineers extended the lead in the 82nd minute when Garza scored following a long punt from DeCampo. With Garza’s 13th goal of the season, she eclipsed Agnieszka Ziolek’s single season points record of 28 set in 2003. It was the second record in as many games for the freshman as she established the single season goal mark in a win Saturday at Mount Holyoke.
Wellesley’s best chance to score came in the 71st minute when Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, HI) drew Decampo out of the net with a nifty move. DeCampo made a great save on the rocket shot and the subsequent rebound sailed just over the crossbar.
DeCampo registered six saves for the Engineers while her Wellesley counterpart Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) made five stops in goal on the afternoon.
Both teams continue NEWMAC play on Saturday at home. WPI hosts Smith at noon and Wellesley entertains Wheaton at 1pm.
