Bates Hands Wellesley Soccer Their First Loss; Blue Fall 4-1
Box Score
BLEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Jen Marino scored two goals and first-year Sam Alper added a goal and two assists to lead the Bates College women's soccer team to a 4-1 defeat of Wellesley College Thursday at Russell Street Field.
With the non-conference win the Bobcats raised their overall record to 1-1, while the visiting Blue, currently ranked No. 8 in New England, fell to 2-1-1.
Alper's cross in the 19th minute found Marino in front of the Wellesley goal, and she got it past Blue junior goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) for a 1-0 lead.
Alper (Holliston, Mass.) scored a goal of her own, her first collegiate tally, in the 32nd minute, following up on the rebound after Martore deflected a Marino shot.
Marino (Methuen, Mass.) gave Bates a commanding 3-0 halftime lead in the 40th minute, taking a pass from sophomore Kim Suvak (Winchester, Mass.) and measuring up a blast from 15 yards out that found the upper far right corner of the net.
Alper set up Bates' fourth goal in the 50th minute, maneuvering past a Blue defender along the Wellesley goal line and finding first-year Alix Vandeventer (North Attleboro, Mass.) for a one-timer and a 4-0 lead.
Wellesley reversed a first-half 13-2 deficit in shots to outshoot Bates 10-5 in the second half. The Blue avoided the shutout in the 77th minute as first-year forward Amanda Young's (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) shot from a tough angle on the left passed Bates sophomore goalie Brittney French (Auburn, Maine) and inside the far post.
Martore finished with six saves for Wellesley, while French stopped one Wellesley shot.
Wellesley is back in action at UMass Dartmouth, next Wednesday at 4:00pm.
