Wellesley Soccer Falls to Clark, 2-0

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Goals by Julie Murray (Millbury, MA) and Erin Peete (Clinton, MA) powered the Clark University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 upset New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over Wellesley College at Granger Field on Saturday afternoon.

Clark raised its record to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley (8-4-2, 6-2 NEWMAC), which entered today’s game ranked in first in the league, dropped its second straight conference game.

Clark held control in the first half, outshooting Wellesley 7-2.  The Cougars had two scoring opportunities in the 37th minute when Kerry Moy (Newton, MA) sent a shot spinning high over the top of the Wellesley net.  Forty seconds later Clark midfielder Kristen Murrone (Middletown, CT) sent a crossing service into the box that found the head of Murray.  The sophomore forward got her head on the ball but her shot bounced hard off the ground and over the Wellesley crossbar. Both teams went into the half scoreless.

Wellesley had its best chance of the day in the opening minutes of the second half.  Junior Haley Geller (Berkeley, Cali.) broke in alone but her bid was stopped by keeper Joanna Clark (Windham, Me.).

Clark broke the dead lock at 55:30 in the second half when Erin Peete (Clinton, Mass.) got her foot on a loose ball in front of the Wellesley net.  Peete controlled the ball and was able to net the first goal of her college career, and the first goal of the game.  Clark stuck again at 66:13 when Murray, who had been denied in the first half, got her head on a corner kick taken by Charlotte Bowman (Peterborough, NH).  This time Murray had better luck and her bid found the back of the net for the second goal of the game.

Clark out shot Wellesley 14-3 on the game and held the total for corners, 7-0.  Aggressive play by Clark defenders and midfielders kept the ball in the Wellesley half of the field for most of the game.

The win marked the seventh shutout on the season for Cougar keeper Clark. Junior Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.)  made six saves for the Blue.

Clark will host MIT for the final regular season home game on Tuesday, October 28 at 6 pm.  Wellesley will host Wheaton in its season finale that same day at 3 pm.
