Wellesley Soccer Defeats Mount Holyoke
Box Score
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – First year forward Ashley Farnsworth (Epping, NH) tallied the lone goal, as the Wellesley College soccer team edged Mount Holyoke College, 1-0, this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. It was the Blue's fourth straight win over the Lyons.
Farnsworth scored what proved to be the winner in the 42nd minute. After receiving a short pass from junior midfielder Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) in the box, she slipped a shot past Mount Holyoke junior goalkeeper Elaine Harvey from close range. It was her third goal of the 2008 campaign.
The Lyons dominated the second half but were unable to place a shot past Wellesley junior goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA). Their best chance came in the 63rd minute, when junior midfielder Perry Markell stole the ball in the box, broke in alone and fired a shot from point blank range. The attempt nearly made its way into the net, but Martore made the save, pushing it over the goal.
Martore made 12 saves en route to her third shutout of the fall. Harvey turned away six shots for the hosts.
Both clubs will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (3-7-0, 0-2-0 NEWMAC) will visit Smith College at 4:00 p.m., while Wellesley (4-2-2, 2-0-0 NEWMAC) will travel to the Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m.
