Wellesley Soccer Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Quarterfinals
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT's Liz Theurer (Gainsville, FL) scored the lone goal of the contest as the visiting Engineers defeated Wellesley in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Quarterfinals on Saturday.
After a scoreless first half that saw each team take seven shots, Theurer broke the tie just 3:29 into the second stanza. The MIT junior had her first attempt saved by Wellesley's Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) but Theurer scrambled to her feet quicker than the Blue keeper to knock the rebound into the back of the net and the Engineers took a 1-0 lead.
Wellesley had a great scoring opportunity with 10 minutes to play when Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) sent a pass to Amanda Young (Palos Verdes Estates, CA), however, Young's shot from 8-yards out was saved by MIT's Stephanie Brenman (Newton, MA) and the Engineer's held on for the 1-0 victory.
For the game, Wellesley held a 16-14 advantage in shots.
In goal, Brenman finished with nine saves for the Engineers, picking up her eighth shutout of the season. In net for Wellesley, Gray picked up seven saves in her second career start.
The loss ends Wellesley's 2008 campaign with an 8-6-2 overall record. The win advances MIT (7-8-2) to the conference Semifinals to play top-seeded Springfield.
