Geller's Goal Leads Wellesley Soccer Past Smith College
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. - Junior Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) netted the game-winner as the Wellesley College soccer team defeated Smith College, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Geller's score came 15:51 into the contest which was played in a constant downpour.
With Wellesley ahead 1-0, the Blue controlled much of the first half, out shooting the Pioneers 10-5. Smith had an opportunity to score with 14 minutes left in the half when Valierie Driscoll (Keene, NH) found Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT) in front of the net, but the shot went high and Wellesley held the 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second period, Wellesley held a 5-3 shooting advantage but Smith made it interesting over the final ten minutes of play. With 5:45 to go in the game, a Wellesley foul gave Smith's Brittoni Famous (Chester Springs, PA) the chance to launch a nice cross in front of the net that was headed away by Wellesley defender Kathleen Keating (Arlington, VA). The Blue also successfully defended a Smith corner kick in the remaining minutes to preserve the 1-0 win.
In net for Wellesley, Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) recorded three saves in her third shutout of the season. For Smith, Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) made five stops.
The win improves Wellesley to 3-1-2 (1-0 NEWMAC) while Smith falls to 1-7, 0-1 NEWMAC. The Blue will play host to Brandeis University on Wednesday, October 1st at 4:00pm while Smith will travel to Westfield State on Wednesday for a 7:00pm start.
