Wellesley Soccer Stays Unbeaten in NEWMAC Play; Downs WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – Amanda Young (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) netted a goal and an assist to lift Wellesley to a hard-earned 3-1 victory over host WPI in NEWMAC women’s soccer action on Tuesday evening. With the result, the Blue up their to 7-2-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. WPI falls to 5-9 on the year and 0-5 in NEWMAC play.
Courtney Callahan (Scottsdale, AZ) got the Blue on the board when she headed home a cross from Young midway through the first half for her first goal of the season. Young then helped the Blue extend the lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute when she buried a cross from Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA).
WPI did not go away quietly. The Engineers sliced the advantage to 2-1 in the 72nd minute when Kelsey Mawhiney (Johnston, RI) scored unassisted. The marker was the first of the season for the junior, who missed the entire 2007 campaign due to injury.
Wellesley put the game out of reach with just 1:03 remaining when Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) found Ashley Farnsworth (Epping, NH) with a nifty pass behind the WPI defense. The first-year player converted the breakaway for her fifth goal of the season, tying her with Young for the team-lead.
Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) turned away eight shots in a winning effort in net for the Blue. She was at her best in the closing minutes of the first half when she smothered a breakaway by Jocelyn Moody (Bainbridge Island, WA). WPI goalkeeper Abaigeal Caras (Essex, CT) notched 10 saves on the night. Liz Tuite (Hopkinton, MA) aided the Engineer defensive cause, clearing a ball off the goal line in the 36th minute.
Both teams return to the field with 1pm NEWMAC matches on Saturday. WPI heads to New London, CT for a match-up with Coast Guard while Wellesley hosts Springfield in a showdown of the top two teams in the conference.
