Wellesley Soccer Defeats Babson in Double Overtime
Box Score
BABSON PARK, Mass. - First-year Megan Turchi (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) scored the game-winning goal with 6:24 left in the second overtime period to lift the visiting Wellesley College Blue to a 1-0 victory over host Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Turchi, who was named last week's NEWMAC Player of the Week, recorded her third-straight game-winner for the Blue, and her fourth overall this season.
With the win, Wellesley remains in the hunt for the regular season conference title at 7-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in league play, while the Beavers, ranked sixth in New England in the most recent NSCAA regional poll, fall to 10-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the NEWMAC.
Both teams struggled to generate scoring chances in regulation, as they combined for just six total shots on net in the first 90 minutes. Junior keeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury, CT) made three of her four saves in the regulation periods for Babson, which held an 11-8 shot advantage during that time, while Wellesley senior goalie Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) turned away three shots as well.
Wellesley posted the only three shots of the overtime periods, including two in the first extra session. Sophomore Amanda Young's (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) bid from 28 yards out was handled easily by Macary at the 94-minute mark, while first-year Jennifer Marble's (Midland, MI) shot from the left side went well wide with 30 seconds left in the period.
The Blue finally put the game away in the second overtime, beginning when Babson was whistled for a foul seven yards outside its own box at the 103-minute mark. Turchi then hit a bullet on the ensuing free kick past Macary's outstretched hands and into the upper right corner at 103:36, giving Wellesley the 1-0 double overtime win.
Both squads resume play with key NEWMAC games this Saturday. Wellesley will play host to Clark, which entered Tuesday atop the conference standings at 4-0-2, at 1 p.m., while Babson travels to Coast Guard for a 2:30 matchup.
