WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College senior Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Blue soccer team to a 4-1 victory over NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard on Tuesday. The win marked the third-straight victory for the Blue, who improved their season mark to 4-4-2 (2-0-1 NEWMAC). Coast Guard falls to 2-8 (0-3 NEWMAC).
Wellesley took a 1-0 lead in the 17th-minute after a nice thru ball from Nikki Fermanis (Scottsdale, AZ) set up Caruso's first goal of the season. Wellesley padded the lead in the 36th minute when Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, WA) lauched a hooking shot around the Coast Guard keeper from 18 yards out, making it 2-0 in favor of the Blue.
Wellesley added one more score in the first half when Allicia Imada (Wailuku, HI) scored at 44:58 off of an assist from Erin Simons (Wilbraham, MA) giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Coast Guard got on the board 11 minutes into the second half when the Bears pulled the Wellesley keeper out of the goal on a breakaway. With an empty net, Coast Guard's Katie Kurek (Williamstown, NJ) fired a perfect strike, picking up her team-leading eighth goal of the season, and cutting the Wellesley lead to 3-1.
Wellesley went back up by three scores when a Caruso pass found Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) who hit the back of the net from six feet out on the right side. The goal set the score to 4-1 in favor of the Blue where it would stay as time expired.
Wellesley's Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) and Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) split time in goal. Martore picked up two saves while Gray faced only two shots. For Coast Guard, Mary Mills (St. Louis, MO) picked up eight saves in 90 minutes of work.
Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, October 10th playing at MIT in a 1:00pm conference clash. Coast Guard will next travel to Smith on Saturday for a 1:00pm NEWMAC match-up.
