Endicott Hands Wellesley Soccer 3-2 Loss

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Visiting Endicott College handed the Wellesley College soccer team a 3-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon in Wellesley.  The win was the first of the season for the Gulls, who move to 1-3, while the Blue fall to 0-2 on the year.

Endicott opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal from Colleen Pepin (Fairhaven, MA) in the 30th minute.  Pepin took an overhead pass, tangled with a Wellesley defender and broke free to put the ball into the back of the net and give the Gulls a 1-0 lead.

Pepin's goal was the only of the first half for either team, with Wellesley holding a 10-4 advantage in shots.

The Gulls increased their lead to 2-0 just three minutes into the second period, when a cross from Caitlin Flynn (Southold, NY) was headed in by Kayla Plante (Sanford, ME).

In the 50th minute, Wellesley's Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) made a nice move on the corner endline to keep the ball in play, and found Nikki Fermanis (Scottsdale, AZ), who scored Wellesley's first goal of the season, cutting the Gull lead to 2-1.

Endicott went back up by two scores in the 70th minute when Allyson Bellemore (Manchester, NH) converted Flynn's second assist of the day into a 3-1 lead for the Gulls.  Thirty seconds later, Wellesley's Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) scored off of a Kara Lungmus (Mercer Island, WA) pass to set the score at 3-2 with under 19 minutes to play.

Despite four Wellesley shots in the final minutes of the game, Endicott held on for the 3-2 victory.

For the Gulls, Nicole Lawlor (Mansfield, MA) allowed two goals while saving 10 shots in 72 minutes of work.  Elise Berry (Londonderry, NH) played the final 18 minutes of the game, picking up two saves.

Wellesley's Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) played the first half in goal for the Blue, allowing one score and picking up three saves. Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) picked up six saves in the second half for Wellesley.

The Blue return to the field on Saturday hosting day one of the Wellesely Invitational.  Wellesley will take on Simmons College at 12:00 with SUNY New Paltz and Salem State squaring off at 2:30pm.  Endicott opens conference play on Saturday with a 1:00pm match-up against Regis.
