First-Years Lead Wellesley to 1-0 Win Over Simmons
Blue Advance to Finals of 2009 Wellesley Invitational

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – First-year Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, VA) scored in the 68th minute of play to lead the Wellesley soccer team to a 1-0 win over Simmons College in the opening round of the Wellesley Invitational.

After a scoreless first half in which the Blue out-shot the Sharks, 14-5, Patry took a pass from classmate Tristen Chin (Duxbury, MA) and knocked it past the Simmons defender. The goal, Patry's first collegiate score, turned out to be the game-winner.

Wellesley's potent offensive attack was stifled by Simmons' goalkeeper Rachel Elliot who racked up 13 saves in the contest to keep the Sharks in the game.

Simmons had an opportunity to tie the game just two minutes after Wellesley went ahead, 2-0. However, Justine Beauchamp's shot in the 70th minute hit the crossbar and the Blue lead was preserved.

In goal for the hosts, Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) and Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) split time in the shut-out win. Martore picked up three saves, while Gray recorded five stops.

The win improves Wellesley to 1-2 on the season, while Simmons falls to 3-2-1.

The Blue advance to the championship of the Invitational taking place tomorrow at 2:30pm. Wellesley will face SUNY New Paltz who defeated Salem State, 2-0. Simmons and Salem State will meet in the consolation at 12:00.

Salem State's Leah Potcner (Wilmington, MA) led the way, recording five saves, while New Paltz's Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, NY) added four saves.

Five minutes into the second half, Abravanel put the Hawk's on the board, converting on an assist from Sheri Lajoie (River Edge, NJ) to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead. After the goal, Salem State turned up the pressure, outshooting New Paltz, 11-2. However, five Vega saves and two key defensive blocks kept the Hawk advantage at 1-0.

Abravanel would add an insurance goal for New Paltz in the 89th minute, her second score of the game, and the Hawks held on for a 2-0 win.

Potcner finished the game with eight saves in 90 minutes of work for Salem State, while Vega recorded 11 saves in the shutout victory for New Paltz.
