Wellesley Soccer Ties With SUNY New Paltz in Invitational Championship
Wellesley Takes Title with 4-2 Win in Penalty Kicks

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – For the third year in a row, the Wellesley Soccer Invitational ended with a double-overtime tie.  Wellesley College took the 2009 title, the team's third straight, edging SUNY New Platz, 4-2, in penalty kicks.

New Paltz opened the game strong, taking six out of the match's first seven shots.  The Hawk's best chance to score came on their first attempt when Samantha Abravanel's shot was barely tipped away by a diving Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA).

In the 15th minute, Wellesley's Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) created a one-on-one with New Paltz keeper, Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, NY), but Vega made an excellent save to preserve the 0-0 tie.

At the half, Wellesley held a 9-8 advantage in shots with Vega and Martore recording two save each.

The second period was evenly played with Wellesley recording seven shots and New Paltz taking six. The Blue had a golden opportunity in the 65th minute, but Chelsea-Ann Patry's (Warrenton, VA) attempt nailed the crossbar.

The Hawk's had a chance with 12 minutes to play as Katie Oliver (Bellport, NY) had a breakaway.  However, strong defense from Wellesley's Loretta White (Northampton, MA) and Allicia Imada (Wailuku, HI) kept the game scoreless, where it would stay as regulation play ended.

In two overtime periods, neither team could manage a score and the game ended officially as a tie.

To award the 2009 Championship, a penalty kick round was played. For Wellesley, Amanda Young (Palos Verdes Estates, CA), Caruso, Megan Turchi (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and Tristen Chin (Duxbury, MA) converted their chances to give Wellesley a 4-2 victory.  Martore also picked up a key save to keep the Invitational title in Wellesley.

For New Paltz, Vega played all 120 minutes between the pipes, recording eight saves.  For Wellesley, Martore finished with two first half saves, while Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) saved five in 75 minutes of work.

The Blue's Tristen Chin was named the 2009 Wellesley Invitational Most Valuable Player. The first-year scored the final penalty kick for Wellesley in the Championship and also assisted on the game-winning goal in a win over Simmons on day one.

Wellesley is off until Saturday when the Blue travel to Skidmore for a 3:00pm game. New Paltz is also back in action on Saturday, hosting a conference match-up against Oneonta at 1:00pm.
