Blue Soccer Surges Past Mount Holyoke on Homecoming
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Three second half goals powered the Wellesley College soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Mount Holyoke on a rainy Saturday in Wellesley. The win improves the Blue to 3-4-2 on the season with a 1-0-1 mark in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons fall to 1-8-0, 0-2-0 in the conference.
After 35 minutes of scoreless soccer, Wellesley's Amanda Young (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) broke through into the box where Jennifer Marble (Midland, MI) found her with a short thru ball. Young had a great angle on the ball and knocked it into the back of the net to give Wellesley the only goal of the first period.
At the half, Wellesley held a slim 7-5 margin in shots, with Lyon keeper Ingo Magnusdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland) recording two saves and Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) stopping one for the Blue.
A minute and 43 seconds into the second period, a corner kick from Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, WA) deflected off of the back of a Lyon defender, giving the Blue a goal and a 2-0 lead.
Mount Holyoke had their best chance of the day in the 61st minute when Mary Cooke (Okemos, MI) created a one-on-one opportunity in front of the Wellesley goal. However, Blue keeper Katie Martore, smothered the bullet off of Cooke's foot and preserved the shut-out.
In the 72nd minute, a cross from Marble found Patry, who took one touch around the Mount Holyoke goalie to create an open net and a 3-0 advantage for the Blue. Wellesley would add one more score, a Megan Turchi (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) penalty kick, to set the final to 4-0 in favor of the Blue.
Overall, Wellesley out-shot the Lyons, 19-9 and held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal for Mount Holyoke, Magnusdottir recorded five saves. Martore picked up the win for Wellesley, also saving five.
Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday at 4:00pm hosting NEWMAC-rival Coast Guard. Mount Holyoke also returns to the field on Tuesday, hosting a 4:30pm conference clash against Smith.
