Wellesley Soccer Advances to NEWMAC Semifinals with 3-1 Win Over Mount Holyoke
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. - Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) and Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, VA) each recorded a goal and an assist to lead top-seeded Wellesley to a 3-1 win over #8 Mount Holyoke at home on Saturday. The Blue advance to the NEWMAC semifinals with the victory.
Wellesley opened scoring in the 11th minute as Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA) blocked a Holyoke clear attempt and Roy knocked home the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later Patry netted a second goal off Roy's assist, and the Blue maintained the early lead into the half behind Katie Martore's (Great Falls, VA) four first-period saves.
The Lyons got on the board after the break when Mary Cooke put a ground shot past Martore in the 67th minute. The Blue defense held them off after that, allowing Mount Holyoke only one more shot in regulation while responding with a barrage of their own, racking up 15 attempts in the second half. An 85th-minute scramble for possession resulted in Wellesley's third goal as Patry found Jennifer Marble (Midland, MI), who sneaked home a shot for the 3-1 final score.
Wellesley held the advantage in possession throughout the game, outshooting the Lyons 25-9. Martore and Mount Holyoke's Ingo Magnusdottir each made five saves on the day.
Wellesley will host the NEWMAC semifinal matches next week, when they will face off against the winner of tonight's Clark-Springfield matchup. The second semifinal will feature #2 Wheaton and #3 MIT.
