Springfield Soccer Upsets #1 Wellesley in NEWMAC Tournament

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Fourth-seeded Springfield College upset top-seeded Wellesley College, 1-0, in the semifinals of the 2009 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s soccer tournament on Saturday.

Springfield’s Whitney Price (Enfield, CT) scored the contest’s lone goal in the 52nd minute of play to give the fourth-seeded Pride the win, advancing them to tomorrow’s championship game.

Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, VA) gave Wellesley a chance to take the lead on a break away in the early minutes of the first half, but her shot went wide.  Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the half.

Price’s goal came just six minutes into the second half on a long free kick.  This proved to be the game winner as a strong Springfield defense held off the Wellesley attack.

Sophomore goalie Hanna MacDougall (Warren, RI) had six saves for Springfield.  Wellesley senior Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) made nine saves in the loss.

Springfield will play MIT in the NEWMAC Finals tomorrow at Wellesley College at 1:00pm.
