Blue Soccer Falls to Roger Williams in Season Opener

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visting Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley.  The game was the season opener for the Blue, while the win lifts the Hawks to 2-1 on the season.

Roger Williams set the tone of the game, outshooting the Blue 10-2 in the first period. Despite the Hawks' offensive attack, the game remained scoreless at the half.  Wellesley keeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) kept the Blue in the game with six stops, including two diving saves.

Just over eight minutes into the second period, Roger Williams broke the scoreless tie when sophomore Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, MA) lauched a slicing shot into the left corner of the goal, passed Blue goalie, Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA).

Fusaro would add another unassisted score late in the period, her third goal of the season, to set the final at 2-0 in favor of Roger Williams.

Hawks' keeper Jen Garside (West Hartford, CT) remained largely untested in goal, making one save.  For Wellesley, Martore and Gray split time, with Gray picking up the loss.

Wellesley is back in action at home on Wednesday with a 4:30pm home contest against Endicott.  Roger Williams will also play on Wednesday, traveling to Rhode Island College for a 4:00pm start.
