Blue Soccer Scores First, But Falls to Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women’s soccer team used three unanswered goals to help defeat Wellesley College 3-1 in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The Blue got out to an early lead when Chelsea-Ann Patry caught Skidmore goalie Megan Sleezer out of position and put it in the empty net at the 5:48 mark for the 1-0 lead.
The Thoroughbreds tied it up when senior Jenni Hibbard took Gabby Palacio’s pass and got past the defender to beat Wellesley keeper Katie Martore at the 27:27 mark.
Skidmore would take the lead a little over five minutes later when Abby Benton collected the rebound off of Emily Quirk’s shot off the crossbar and put it in to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 lead.
Skidmore would add another goal in the second half when Hibbard split the defense with the pass and Maggie Abernathy beat Wellesley goalie Sarah Gray for her first collegiate goal.
The Thoroughbreds outshot Wellesley 20-5 and improved to 4-1-1 on the season while Wellesley dropped to 1-3-1. Megan Sleezer made two saves in goal for the victory. Katie Martore made three saves in the first half and Sarah Gray made five in the second half in the losing effort for the Blue.
