Wellesley Soccer Posts 3-0 Shutout Over WPI

WELLESLEY, Mass - The Wellesley College soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC battle on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue improve their season record to 5-5-2 (3-1-1) while the Engineers fall to 5-9 (1-4 NEWMAC).
Wellesley started the scoring six minutes into the game when Megan Turchi (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) worked herself free at the top of the box and launched a bullet past the WPI keeper. The Blue extended their lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute, with an unassisted tally from Catherine Caruso (Belmont, MA).
Wellesley led 2-0 at the half, holding a 13-9 advantage in shots, with a 4-2 lead in corners.
Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) added Wellesley's third score of the game, converting a pass from teammate Chelsea-Ann Patry (Warrenton, VA) to put the Blue in front, 3-0, with 40 minutes to play in the contest.
WPI's best opportunity to score came in the 58th minute when two quick shots from Engineer Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) gave WPI a corner kick. On the corner, Hailey Taylor's (Colusa, CA) kick found the foot of Katie Partridge (Worcester, MA), but Blue keeper Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) smothered the ball to preserve the shutout for Wellesley.
Blue goalies Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) and Gray split time in the victory. Martore recorded five saves in the first half, while Gray added seven in the second. Rebecca Newman (Howell, NJ) made 10 saves for the visitors while Garza led the Engineer offense with six shots.
For the game, Wellesley out shot WPI 28-17, while recording eight of the game's 12 corner kicks.
WPI in back in action on Saturday, October 17th hosting NEWMAC opponent Coast Guard at 1:00pm.
Wellesley goes on the road Saturday, taking on defending NEWMAC Champion Springfield, also at 1:00pm.
