Wellesley, St. Lawrence Advance to Wellesley Invite Final

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Megan Turchi (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) launched a beautiful penalty kick over the head of the UMass-Boston keeper and into the back of the net, as the Wellesley College soccer team defeated the Beacons 2-1 in double overtime.
The victory sends the Blue (3-1) to tomorrow's championship game of the Wellesley Invitational to face St. Lawrence at 1:30pm. UMass-Boston (2-1) will play Simmons in the consolation game at 11:00am.
After the first overtime ended without a winner, Turchi's goal came 1:39 into the second overtime period, following a Beacon red card. The goal was the first of the season for Turchi, who finished second on the Blue in scoring in 2009.
Wellesley got on the board first, as first-year Ariel Chao (Carlsbad, CA) continued her three-game scoring streak with a goal in the 17th-minute of play. Chao was assisted by classmate Ava Mokhtari (Eden Prairie, MN).
The Blue's early lead would stand until the Beacons knotted the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute of play. Ally Modzelewski (Newtown, CT) tallied the equalizer for UMass-Boston.
In the first overtime period, Wellesley recored a 3-1 shot advantage, but the Blue couldn't find the back of the net. For the game, the Wellesley out-shot the Beacons, 24-8.
UMass-Boston keeper Katie Coscia (Pittsfield, MA) played a solid game, tallying eight saves. Wellesley netminder Sarah Gray (Montclair, VA) picked up two saves on the afternoon.
WELLESLEY, Mass. - The St. Lawrence women’s soccer team opened the 2010 Wellesley Invitational in convincing fashion with a 5-0 victory over Simmons College. The Saturday afternoon win brought the Saints record to 3-1, while the Sharks fall to 1-2.
Marcelle Justison picked up a goal at the 14-minute mark (assisted by Stephanie Sayward) as the Saints opened with an early 1-0 lead. Despite a 13-0 St. Lawrence edge in shots in the first half, the game remained 1-0 at the break.
St. Lawrence took control in the second half, as Erika Gobielle scored back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to 3-0. Gobrielle’s first score, an unassisted tally came just under two minutes into the period, with the second coming two minutes later off of a pass from Justison.
The Saints would add two more scores before time expired, as Julia Friesen and Louise Wheeler each contributed goals to make the final 5-0 in favor of St. Lawrence.
In net for St. Lawrence, Abby van Geldern picked up the shutout, remaining largely untested with one save. For Simmons, Chelsea Hersey launched the only shot on goal for the Sharks.
St. Lawrence will play in tomorrow’s 1:30 Championship game against the winner of Wellesley/UMass-Boston. Simmons will play in the consolation at 11:00am.
