Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Wins Betty Spears Relays
Sorenson Hits National Qualifying Marks in 1-Meter, 3-Meter Diving

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College Swimming and Diving team opened the 2008-2009 season with a win at Wellesley’s 12th annual Betty Spears Relays. The Blue won every event en route to a team victory with 291 points. Westfield State College took second with a score of 251 while Mount Holyoke College (131 points) and Plymouth State University (92 points) followed.
Wellesley was led by seniors Kate Sorensen (Bolton, MA) and Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IN), sophomore Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) and first-year Stephanie Welch (Dedham, MA). Sorenson recorded wins in both diving events, taking the 1-meter with a score of 251.10 while winning the 3-meter with 268.65 points. Both scores qualified her for NCAA consideration. On the swimming side, Johnson, Dutton and Welch each paced Wellesley taking part in five first-place relay teams.
Westfield State picked up a majority of their point total in the diving events, taking second through seventh in the 1-meter and second through fifth in the three-meters. Kim Schmidt took second in both events while Ariana Mastro took third, both recording NCAA consideration scores.
Mount Holyoke was paced by first-year Mary Kate Miller who picked up four second-place finishes in the relay events while Plymouth State's Amanda Branch led two teams to second-place finishes.
Wellesley and Plymouth State are back in action on Saturday, November 15th with a 1:00pm dual meet at Wellesley. Mount Holyoke and Westfield State will next hit the water at the Regis College Invitational with diving events taking place at 7:00pm on Friday and swimming on Saturday at 12:00pm.
