Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Defeats Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Using a balanced attack, the Wellesley College women’s swimming and diving team downed Mount Holyoke College, 172-142, on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium. The Blue took top honors in 10 of the 17 events to secure their 19th straight win over the Lyons.

Wellesley was led by Carolyn Jackson (Leesburg, VA) who picked up two individual wins and was a part of a winning relay team.  She took first place in the 50-breast in a time of 32.81 and then posted a winning time of 1:11.74 in the 100-breast.  In the 200-Medly Relay, Jackson teamed up with Katie Foley (Orono, ME), Virginia Hung (Plainsboro, NJ) and Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) to touch the wall first, in 1:59.72.

Wellesley swept the diving events, with Katherine Goffin (Falmouth, ME) winning the 1-meter with a score of 170.70 and the 3-meter with a score of 170.69.  Hung also had a great day for the Blue, winning the 100-fly in 1:03.14 and taking second in the 100-free in 56.72, just .15 seconds off the winning time.  She also posted the fastest time in an exhibition swim in the 200-IM (2:23.83).

Other individual winners for Wellesley included Melanie Kaplan (La Jolla, CA) in the 500-free (5:42.86), Foley in the 50-back (31.17), Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IL) in the 50-free (26.02) and Dutton in the 1650-free (19.59).

Both squads are slated to cap off their regular seasons next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (4-3) will travel to Smith College, while Wellesley (5-4) will host Connecticut College and Bates College.  Wellesley will celebrate Senior Day and will also be wearing pink swim cap in a breast cancer fundraiser.
