Wellesley College Swimming & Diving Falls to MIT

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The visting MIT swimming and diving team used 14 first-place finishes to defeat Wellesley in dual meet action on Wednesday evening at Chandler Pool.  The Engineers grabbed a 218-81 victory over the Blue.

MIT was led by first-years Anna Kokensparger (Omaha, NE), Lauren Lo (Marlboro, NJ) and Elina Hu (Oshkosh, WI), and senior Kristie D'Ambrosio (Wantagh, NY), who each racked up 18 points for the Engineers.

Kokensparger won the 100-fly (57.28) and the 200-fly (2:06.65) while Lo picked up individual wins in the 100-breast (1:10.33) and the 200-breast (2:33.58).  Hu placed first in both the 100-back (1:02.98) and the 100-free (55.36), while D'Ambrosio won both the 1-meter (246.55) and the 3-meter (270.85) diving events.

Also for the Engineers, junior Carrie DeBoer (Western Springs, IL) won the 1000-free (11:17.83), sophomore Qing Li (Shoreham, NY) took first in the 200-back (2:19.82) and senior Ariadne Smith (San Jose, CA) placed first in the 400 IM (4:59.97).  Rounding out the top finishers for MIT, sophomore Sydney Giblin (Williamsburg, VA) won the 200 free (2:00.54) while also placing second in the 100-free (55.47).

MIT won both relay events with the team of Kokensparger, Nicole Wang (Windsor, CN), Lo and Amy Jacobi (Cranbury, NJ) taking the 200-free relay (1:40.15) and the team of Hu, Lo, Jacobi and Kokensparger winning the 200-medley relay (1:52.48).

For Wellesley, fifth-year senior Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IL) won the 50-free in a time of 24.95 while junior Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) took first place in the 500-free in 5:27.07.

The Blue were also paced by three swimmers who notched life-time personal bests at the meet.  First-year Carolyn Jackson (Leesburg, VA) took second in the 100-breast with a PR of 1:10.75 and also finished second in the 200-breast in 2:37.26, also a PR.  Sophomore Melanie Kaplan (La Jolla, CA) surpassed her all-time mark in the 1000-free, where her time of 11:34.21 placed her third overall.  First-year Shaheen Rangwalla (Andover, MA) hit her lifetime best of 2:30.23 in the 200-fly.

Rounding out the scoring for Wellesley, senior Hilary Gram (Hopkinton, MA) placed second in the 400-IM in a time of 5:01.78.

MIT hits the road again on Saturday at 1:00pm when the Engineers travel to Bowdoin to compete in a tri-meet with the Polar Bears and NEWMAC-rival Babson.  Wellesley is back in action on Friday, traveling to Simmons for a 7:00pm dual meet.
