Wellesley Tennis Rolls To Third-Straight Win; Downs Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. –  The Wellesley College tennis team picked up their third straight victory of 2008 with an 8-1 win over Wheaton College (Mass.) in Tuesday afternoon New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Wellesley jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play and then swept singles for the 8-1 team victory. The result improves the Blue to 3-0 (3-0 NEWMAC) on the season while Wheaton (7-1, 2-1) picks up it's first loss in 2008.  Wellesley has now outscored its' opponents 26-1 in 2008.

Wellesley first-year Maria Watanabe (Houston, TX) was a double-winner on the day, with a victory at number one singles over sophomore Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill School) and a win at number two doubles with partner Grace Cheng (Columbia, MD). The classmates took their second flight match 8-0 over the Wheaton duo of junior Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) and freshman Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI/Lincoln School).

Wheaton picked up it's lone win at number one doubles when Geocaris and sophomore Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH/Central) picked up an 8-4 win over Wellesley's Jennifer Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) and Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD).

Other winners for Wellesley included Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) and Malika Hayashi (Tokyo, Japan) at number three doubles and in singles, Schwarzkopf, Shivani Saxena (Milan, Italy), Herman, Meghan Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) and Katie Ching (Kaneohe, HI) were all winners.

Both teams return to action with home events on October 4th at 1:00pm.  Wellesley will host Mount Holyoke on Homecoming while Wheaton will take on Smith.
