Wellesley Tennis Defeats Babson, 7-2

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team knocked off NEWMAC-rival Babson, 7-2, indoors at the Keohane Sports Center on Tuesday evening. Wellesley improves to 6-2 overall with a 6-1 mark in NEWMAC play, while Babson's season mark now stands at 6-3, 4-2 in the NEWMAC.

The match marks the end of the regular season for Wellesley, who will head into the NEWMAC playoffs as the second seed. Babson will close out the regular season next Tuesday, hosting MIT at 2:00pm in a match rescheduled from September 29th. 

Wellesley posted a sweep of the doubles competition to take a 3-0 lead in the match.  In the second position, Marie Wantanabe (Houston, TX) and Meghan Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) continued their impressive play, blanking their opponents, 8-0, for the third straight match. 

The Blue also posted matching 8-6 wins at first and third doubles. Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) stretched their season record to 8-3 at first doubles, while Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) and Stephanie Chu (Hilo, HI) picked up their first victory of the season in the third doubles spot.

After a quick 6-3, 6-0 win from Stubblebine at third singles, Wellesley got the deciding victory from Wantanabe who was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Jes Huang (Andover, MA) in the first singles position.  The Blue then stretched the lead to 6-0 with a 7-6(4), 6-0 win from Herman in the fourth spot. 

Wellesley's Shen and Babson's Rebecca Stone (Dover, MA) had a marathon battle in the second singles spot, with Shen posting a tight 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-8 victory for Wellesley's seventh point of the match.

Babson got on the board in the fifth singles spot as Mikaela Stamas (Northborough, MA) recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mariya Chokova (Kazanlak, Bulgaria) and also got a win from Gabriela Baez (Quito, Ecuador) in the sixth spot, a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Elena Bowen (Yardley, PA).

Both teams will next compete at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Amherst College, with the three-day affair beginning on Friday.
