Wellesley Tennis Takes Second at 2010 Seven Sisters Championship
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team finished the 2010 Seven Sisters Championships in second place. The Blue went 3-1 with their only loss coming to first-place Vassar.
The Blue opened play with a 5-0 win over Bryn Mawr and ended day one with a 4-1 triumph over Mount Holyoke, carrying a 2-0 record. On day two, Wellesley opened with a 5-0 victory over Smith before losing a thrilling 3-2 decision against Vassar in the Championship match.
Against Bryn Mawr, Wellesley allowed their opponents to take just one singles game. Marie Watanabe (Houston, TX) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the first spot, while Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta) and Meghan Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) both won 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Mohona Siddique (Chevy Chase, MD) and Nathalie Herman (San Francisco, CA) paired up to take a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 game, while Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, FL) and Whitney Reid (Bensalem, PA) were 6-2, 6-2 winners. The win marked the first career win for Cummings, a senior volleyball standout that joined the Wellesley tennis team this semester.
Against Mount Holyoke, Watanabe, Shen and Stubblebine all picked up singles wins. In doubles, Cummings and Reid posted a 7-5, 6-3 win, while Herman and Siddique dropped a tight match, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 10-4.
In the win over Smith, Watanabe, Shen and Siddique all improved to 3-0 in the tournament with singles wins. Cummings and Reid also remained undefeated with a win at second doubles, while Herman and Siddique were winners in the first doubles spot.
In the Championship match, Watanabe was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Nicole Pontee, while Stubblebine won 6-3, 6-3 over Jennifer Ruther at three. Shen lost a tight 6-4, 6-4 match at two to set the score at 2-1 in favor of Wellesley. In doubles, Vassar took the first flight to narrow the match to 2-2. In the final match of the day, Cummings and Reid dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 decision at two doubles as Vassar took the title.
Wellesley was represented on the All-Tournament team by Watanabe at #1 singles and Stubblebine at #3 singles. Cummings and Reid were named All-Tournament at #2 doubles.
