Blue Tennis Falls to Defending NEWMAC Champion, Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College women's upended Wellesley College in a rematch of last year's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship match. The Lyons posted a 7-2 victory over the Blue inside Beard Field House on Tuesday.

Wheaton, which is ranked 10th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll, collected its third straight win to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, while 11th-ranked Wellesley suffered its second consecutive loss in falling to 2-2 and 2-1.

The hosts won all three doubles matches, with regionally-ranked seniors Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA) and Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH) topping senior Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Diana Granger (Glencoe, IL) by an 8-5 count in the first spot.

Freshmen Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, CA) and Madison Hartley (Charlotte, VT) notched an 8-3 triumph at second doubles, while senior Ellen Van Faasen (Manchester, MA) and junior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, RI) won 8-6 at number three.

Geocaris and Cooke clinched the team victory with a pair of straight-set singles wins in the second and third positions, respectively, as each surrendered three games.  Teague and DiOrio overcame first-set deficits to capture three-set victories at one and four, respectively.

Wellesley got their victories in the last two sports, as Granger recorded a 6-2, 6-1 triumph for Wellesley in the fifth spot, while freshman Morgan Johnstonbaugh (Gibsonia, PA) won in three sets at number six.

The Lyons continue their three-match homestand on Saturday against league opponent Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. Wellesley is also back to the courts on Saturday, traveling to Clark at 1:00p.m.
