Wellesley Volleyball Sweeps Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Clark University women’s volleyball team dropped three games to the visiting Wellesley College Blue in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Kneller Athletic Center on Tuesday night. Game scores were 30-8, 30-16, 30-17.

Clark (4-11, 0-5 NEWMAC) drops its third consecutive game and remains winless in the NEWMAC. Winners of seven straight, Wellesley improves to 13-3 overall and an undefeated 5-0 in league play.

The Cougars came out flat in the opener, losing 30-8.

In game two, Clark responded and jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Wellesley rattled off four straight points to take a 7-6 edge, but a spike from senior Kate Head (Lexington, Mass.) knotted the score at seven-all. After a 4-1 Blue spurt, sophomore Liz Magier (Newburgh, N.Y.) hit a line drive to right court to bring the Cougars within two (9-11).

A back and forth battle ensued between the two teams, but a Clark hitting error, a service ace from junior Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Cali.) and a kill from senior Tracy Waldman (Seattle, Wash.) gave Wellesley a 17-12 advantage. Wellesley extended their lead on 12 straight service points from Peters and held on for a 30-16 victory.

Clark trailed by two (6-8) on a tip from sophomore Brittany Meadows early in game three, but would get no closer. The Cougars made it interesting with two straight points from senior Sarah Hunsucker (Orinda, Cali.) – a kill to the far left corner and a bloop hit – to close the gap, but the Blue went on to post a 30-17 victory.

Hunsucker had five kills and sophomore Emily Visone (West Hempstead, N.Y.) added nine digs to lead Clark. Magier and first-year Lisa Taylor (Libertyville, Ill.) finished with six digs apiece.

Sophomore Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) led Wellesley with seven kills. Waldman chipped in with six kills, while Peters added nine digs and senior Billie Briones (Sonoma, Cali.) finished with 18 assists and four service aces.

Clark will travel to Rhode Island College for a tri-match with Eastern Nazarene University on Saturday. Wellesley will compete at the Seven Sisters Tournament at Vassar College this weekend.
