MIT Edges Wellesley for Tufts Invitational Title

Tournament Summary

MEDFORD – MIT was crowned champion of the 2007 Tufts Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. Both the Engineers and Wellesley College finished the two-day tournament with 4-0 records, but MIT was awarded the title based on their 12-1 record in games played. Wellesley had a 12-5 mark in games played. The teams did not face each other during the weekend.

After going 2-0 on Friday, Wellesley defeated SUNY Brockport in five hard-fought games (26-30, 30-27, 31-29, 27-30, 15-10) to open the second day. Jessica Duff (Milton, Abdingdon, UK) and Samantha Du (Houston, Texas) led the Blue offensively, with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Wellesley carried the momentum into its next match as it defeated Bridgewater State 3-1 (30-32, 30-28, 30-20 30-28). Murielle Dawdy (Larkspur, Calif.) led the Blue attack, with 16 kills, while Tracy Waldman (Seattle, Wash.) added 10.

Elizabethtown, visiting from Pennsylvania, took third place at the tournament with a 2-2 mark. Host Tufts finished fourth, edging Brockport State by virtue of six games won to five by Brockport. The Jumbos also had a 3-0 head-to-head win over the Golden Eagles.

An All-Tournament team will be announced once the votes from the coaches are tallied.
