Wellesley Downs Wheaton, 3-0

Wellesley, Mass. – Wellesley Volleyball used aggressive serving and balanced hitting to sweep Wheaton College, 3-0 (30-12, 30-28, 30-18). The win lifts the Blue to 17-3 (6-0 NEWMAC). The Lyons drop to 16-9 (2-4 NEWMAC).

Wellesley took control of the match quickly, jumping to a 19-6 lead in game one and cruising to a 30-12 win. Wheaton re-grouped and led much of game two, relying on tough serving from Lauren Kraus (Westboro, Mass.) and Natasha von Sonn (Burbank, Calif.). Wellesley managed to a 21-18 lead, but the Lyons battled back to tie the game at 28 a piece before the Blue closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Game three was once again all Wellesley, as the Blue grabbed a 13-8 lead and held on for a 30-18 win.

The Wellesley attack was led by Heather Mellquist (Baltimore, Ohio) and Arcadia Paine (Durango, Colo.), with nine kills a piece. Lauren Rasmussen (Bonita, Calif.) and Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) chipped in eight and seven kill, respectively. Senior setter Billie Briones tallied 24 assists, while Naomi Iwata (Seattle, Wash.) led the Blue with 10 digs.

Wheaton was led by sophomore middle hitter Lauren Kraus (Westboro, Mass.) and first-year outside Sam Andreacchi (Burlingame, Calif.) with six kills each. First-year setter Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass) tallied 19 assists in the loss, while libero Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn.) led all players with 19 digs.

The Blue return to action Friday night, hosting University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7:00 on the first day of the Wellesley Invitational. Wheaton takes the court on Saturday as well, when they travel to the Wentworth Institute of Technology for a tri-match with their hosts and Pine Manor College.
