Wellesley Takes Third at Hall of Fame

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – With a marathon five-set win over Amherst College, Wellesley volleyball captured third at the prestigious 16-team Hall of Fame tournament on October 24-25 at Smith College.  Springfield College took the title, defeating Tufts in the championship match, 3-2.

The Blue opened the tournament on Friday evening, hitting a whopping .450 in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-17) win over Brandeis.  Three Wellesley players -- Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.), Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) and Samantha Du (Houston, Tx.) -- hit .500 or above for the match.  The win put the Blue in the semi-finals against conference rival Springfield, who handed the Blue a 3-1 loss (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21).  In the third-place match, Wellesley outlasted Amherst to take a 3-2 victory (25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 29-31, 17-15).  Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) recorded a career-high 67 assists in the match.

Duff led the Blue at the net for the weekend, tallying 51 kills and six blocks in the tournament, followed by Du with 39 kills and 11 blocks, and Cummings with 37 kills and four blocks.  Peng distributed 151 assists in tournament play, while Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) racked up 64 digs and nine aces, earning her All-Tournament honors.

The Blue return to action Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m., when they travel to MIT for a key NEWMAC match-up.
