Wellesley Invitational
Match #1 -- 10/17, 5:00 p.m. -- Wellesley 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-12)
Wellesley volleyball launched the 2008 Wellesley Invitational with authority, hitting .344 as a team to defeat Bridgewater State College 3-0 in the opening match of the four-team round-robin event. The Blue move to 18-4 on the season, while the Bears drop to 5-17.
Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Wellesley attack with 13 kills, followed by Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) with nine. Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) led all players with 17 digs, while setter Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) recorded a double-double, with 33 assists and 13 digs.
For the Bears, Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) and Alyssa Grimes (Acushnet, Mass.) tallied five kills each, as Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) chipped in three. Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, Mass.) led with BSC with 11 digs, while Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, Mass.) dished out 13 assists in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 18, as the Wellesley Invitational continues. The Blue will face Skidmore College at 10 a.m. and Nazareth at 2 p.m. The Bears take the court at noon against Nazareth and finish the day at 4 p.m. against Skidmore.
Match #2 -- 10/17, 7:30 p.m. -- Nazareth 3, Skidmore 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23)
Junior middleblocker Kate Reed (Horseheads, N.Y.) amassed 12 kills to lead Nazareth College to a three-game sweep of Skidmore in the second match of the Wellesley Invitational. The win lifts the Golden Eagles to 19-6 overall. The Thorougbreds drop to 19-7.
Murray Koch (Palo Alto, Calif.) led Skidmore at the net, with 10 kills on the night. Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) tallied 21 digs for the Thoroughbreds, while Becca Ormsby (Charlton, N.Y.) distributed 31 assists in the loss.
In addition to her 12 kills, Nazareth's Reed tallied two blocks in the match. Laura Persico (Ravena, N.Y.) added 10 kills, while Mallorie Clary (Baltimore, Md.) anchored the Nazareth defense with 21 digs. Kate Zwickl (Chester, N.Y.) recorded 42 assists and two blocks in the win.
The Wellesley Invitational continues tomorrow, as Skidmore takes on Wellesley at 10 a.m. and Bridgewater State at 4 p.m. Nazareth will face Bridgewater State at noon and the hosts, Wellesley College, at 2 p.m.
Match #3 -- 10/18, 10:00 a.m. -- Wellesley 3, Skidmore 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-19)
Wellesley managed a three-game sweep of Skidmore to open the second day of the Wellesley Invitational. The Blue move to 19-4 for the season, while the Thorougbreds fall to 19-8.
Kelley Vershbow (Washington, DC) led Skidmore with nine kills, followed by Murray Koch (Palo Alto, Calif.) with eight. Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) tallied 20 digs for the Thoroughbreds, while Koch chipped in 13. Becca Ormsby (Charlton, N.Y.) recorded 23 assists in the loss.
Wellesley's outside hitting tandem of Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) and Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) paved the way for the Blue, tallying 16 and 17 kills, respectively. Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) amassed 22 digs, followed by Duff with 12 and Cummings with 11. Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) dished out 44 assists in the match.
Skidmore plays its final match of the tournament at 4 p.m., when it takes on Bridgewater State College. Wellesley will face Nazareth at 2 p.m.
Match #4 -- 10/18, 12:00 p.m. -- Nazareth 3, Bridgewater State 1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19)
Nazareth College rebounded from a second-set loss to defeat Bridgewater State 3-1 in the fourth round of the Wellesley Invitational. Nazareth now stands at 20-6 overall, 2-0 in the tournament. The Bears drop to 5-18, and 0-2.
Alyssa Grimes (Acushnet, Mass.) led Bridgewater State with nine kills, followed by Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) with eight. Clerc also led the Bears with 17 digs, while Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, Mass.) and Alexis Corazzini (Seekonk, Mass.) recorded 11 each. Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, Mass.) tallied 30 assists in the loss.

Match #5 -- 10/18, 2:00 p.m. -- Nazareth 3, Wellesley 2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-10)
Despite taking the first two sets, Wellesley volleyball fell to Nazareth College, 3-2, in the fifth round of the Wellesley Invitational. The win gives the Golden Eagles the tournament title with a perfect record of 3-0. Nazareth moves to 21-6 on the season. The Blue drop to 19-5, as they finish the Invitational at 2-1.

Mallorie Clary (Baltimore, Md.) led all players with 24 digs, while Carra Vanderstyne (Victor, N.Y.) added 15 and and Natasha Villane (Canandaigua, N.Y.) chipped in 11. Kate Zwickl (Chester, N.Y.) tallied 44 assists.
Samantha Du (Houston, Tx.) led the Wellesley attack with 15 kills. Casi Schwisow (Bellevue, Wash.) added 10 kills, followed by Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) with eight. Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) recorded 18 digs, Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) distributed 43 assists in the match.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday, October 21, when they travel to Fredonia for a 7 p.m. match. Wellesley takes the court on Tuesday as well, when they host Wheaton College in a NEWMAC contest.
Match #6 -- 10/18, 4:00 p.m. -- Skidmore 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16)
Skidmore College finished its weekend at the Wellesley Invitational by defeating Bridgewater State 3-0 in the sixth and final match of the tournament. The win lifts Skidmore to 20-8. The fall to 5-20.
Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) led Bridgewater State with 11 kills, while Shelby Burghardt (Marshfield, Mass.) chipped in three kills and five blocks. Alexis Corazzini (Seekonk, Mass.) and Brianne Cobb (New Bedford, Mass.) anchored the Bear defense with ten and nine digs, respectively. Corazzini also recorded seven aces. Natalie Cohen (Marstons Mills, Mass.) distributed 17 assists in the match.
Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) paced the Thoroughbreds at the net with 14 kills, followed by Murray Koch (Palo Alto, Calif.) with 13. Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) tallied 19 digs, as Koch added in 12. Becca Ormsby (Charlton, N.Y.) recorded 35 assists in the win.
Skidmore takes the court again on Friday, October 24, at 4 p.m., when they host St. Lawrence University in the opening round of the Skidmore Classic. Bridgewater returns to action on Tuesday, October 21, at 6 p.m., when they host Salem State in a MASCAC conference match.
