Wellesley Opens NEWMAC Play With Sweep Over Mount Holyoke
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College volleyball team opened NEWMAC play with a 3-0 sweep over Mount Holyoke this evening at Keohane Sports Center. The win lifts the Blue to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference. The Lyons drop to 1-2, 0-1 in NEWMAC play.
Mount Holyoke jumped out to an early lead in set one, as a three-point serving run from Sorcha Grogan (Dripping Springs, TX) gave the visitors a 6-4 lead. Wellesley responded with eight unanswered points to take control of the set with a 12-6 lead. The Lyons surged halfway through the game, closing the gap to 16-12, but Wellesley's Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach, CA) broke the set open with two aces in a four-point run as the Blue cruised to a 25-13 win.
Set two was all Blue, as they scored early and often to take an 18-4 advantage before winning 25-8. Wellesley carried the momentum into game three, sealing the sweep with a 25-7 win.
Five Lyons tallied two kills each, as Nia Hinkson (Snellville, GA), Tyler Protano-Goodwin (Shutesbury, MA), Morgan Cooley (Plymouth, MA), Kathryn Brummer (Massapequa Park, NY), and Rosa Marruffo (Tulsa, OK) all contributed to the Mount Holyoke offense. Grogan notched two aces for the visitors, while Marruffo chipped in five digs in the loss.
Campbell and Isabel Custodio led the Blue with six kills each, as Allison Li (Los Angeles, CA) added five. First-Year Jessica Mullen (Wilmington, DE) celebrated her birthday with five kills on eight attempts for a team-leading .625 hitting percentage. Amanda Duritsch (Troy, OH) recorded four kills and seven aces, while Victoria Peng tallied 18 assists in the win.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7:00p.m., when they host to Bay Path College in a non-conference match. Wellesley will travel to Springfield on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1:00 p.m. for a key early-season NEWMAC matchup.
