Wellesley Volleyball Takes Third Place at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. – After splitting on the first day of competition, the Wellesley College volleyball team opened play on day two of the Tufts Invitational with a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over Keene State on Saturday (box score).

Wellesley lost the first two sets against Keene, 25-23 and 25-19 to fall behind 2-0 in the match.  However, the Blue pulled out a 25-21 win in the third set and cruised to a 25-15 win in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2.  In the deciding set, Wellesley fell behind 6-1, but came back to post a 15-13 win and take the match, 3-2.  Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach, CA) led the Blue with a career-high 25 kills.  Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, CA) tallied a season-high 34 assists and six service aces, while Isabel Custodio (Powell, OH) added 14 kills and 20 assists.

Wellesley finished the day with a solid 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-14) win over Potsdam State (box score).  Custodio notched a match high 14 kills for the Blue. 

With two straight wins on day two, Wellesley finished the tournament with a record of 3-1, good enough for third place in the eight-team invitational.  Senior outside hitter Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, FL) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Wellesley, now 10-5 on the season, returns to action Tuesday, October 6, when they travel to Babson for a key NEWMAC match-up at 7:00pm.

TUFTS UNIVERSITY WINS 2009 TUFTS INVITATIONAL ON TIE-BREAKER

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University volleyball team won its third Tufts Invitational title, but its first since 2006, on Saturday at Cousens Gymnasium. The Jumbos won all four of their matches during the weekend, as did MIT. However, Tufts was declared the champion due to a 12-1 record in sets. MIT was 12-2 in sets after coming back from down two sets to defeat Hiram in five on Saturday. Tufts and MIT did not meet head-to-head during the weekend. The only set Tufts lost was the first against Hiram College on Friday night.
Wellesley College also came back from down two against Keene State on Saturday to win in five and grab third place in the tournament with a 3-1 record.
