Big Second-Half Leads Coast Guard Past Wellesley

NEW LONDON, CONN.—Coast Guard used a 23-1 run in the second half, holding Wellesley to just two baskets in the final 11:15 of the game as the Bears outscored the Blue 41-16 in the second half enroute to a 66-39 win in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard won its fourth straight to improve to 11-2 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 and in a first place tie with Wheaton in the NEWMAC.
Freshman Meggan Carkin’s bucket with 11:15 left pulled the Blue to within 38-32 with 11:15 left before the Bears scored 13 straight to begin the 23-1 run which would give the Bears a commanding 61-33 lead with 3:04 left. Sophomore Melissa Martinelli had a game-high 21 points on nine of 12 shooting, to go with eight rebounds to lead Coast Guard. Senior Katie Colella had a season-high 15 points and senior NatalieMoyer, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Wellesley (4-10, 1-3) jumped out to an 8-0 lead until Martinelli’s free throw with 49 seconds left in the first half gave the Bears their first lead of the game 23-22. Coast Guard led 25-23 at halftime.
Courtney Richter led Wellesley with 13 points and eight rebounds while Julia Thomas added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Coast Guard which finished 25 of 63 from the floor (39.7%), shot much better in the second half, 16 of 34 (47.1%) after making just nine of 29 (31%) in the first 20 minutes. The Bears were nine of 35 from 3-point range.
Wellesley was 13 for 55 from the floor (23.6%) while making just two of 16 from 3-point range.
