Wellesley Lacrosse Edges Eastern Connecticut

WELLESLEY, MA – Junior goalkeeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied 17 saves this afternoon, including 10 during a furious second-half comeback, to lead Wellesley lacrosse over Eastern Connecticut State, 15-14, in a non-conference game at Wellesley College.  The win lifts the Blue to 8-5. Eastern Connecticut falls to 6-6.

Wellesley got on the board quickly, as Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio) snagged the opening draw control and passed to Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.), who raced downfield to score just 18 seconds into the game.  Eastern's Megan Gloster (Agawam, Mass.) tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal at the 23:34 mark, but the rest of the opening period belonged to the Blue.  Over the remaining 20 minutes, Welllesley outscored the Warriors 6-2, including two free position goals from Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) for a 7-3 halftime lead.

Eastern opened the second half with two quick scores, one from Brooke Wayte (Bellport, N.Y.), her second of the game, and one from Lily Anderson (Portland, Maine), also her second, to trim the lead to 7-5.  Wellesley responded with four goals in four minutes, two from Catherine Schaefer (Coxsakie, N.Y.) and two more from Geller, to give the Blue an 11-5 lead with 20 minutes remaining. 

The Warriors stepped up their offensive and defensive pressure, outscoring Wellesley 7-1 over the next 15 minutes. Sparked by two assists and one goal from Natalie Sims (Carle Place, N.Y.) and two more goals from Gloster, the visitors tied the score at 12-12 at the 5:30 mark.

Wellesley finally broke through with 4:49 remaining, when Elizabeth Hays (Roswell, Ga.) found the back of the net to give the Blue a one-point lead.  Two more quick goals stretched the lead to 15-12 with only 1:48 left. The Warriors surged again, netting two more balls in the next minute, but Wellesley held on for the 15-14 win.

The Eastern offense featured seven players who netted goals and four who tallied assists.  Gloster led the way with five points on three goals and two assists.  Anderson netted four goals, while Wayte and Sims chipped in two goals each, along with two assists and one assist, respectively.  Defensively, Gloster  and Allison Levine (Medford, N.Y.) grabbed four ground balls.  Levine also caused four turnovers, whileTaylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) caused three.  In goal for the Warriors, Joslin Wells (Marston Mills, Mass.) saved six shots.

For the Blue, Geller led the way with seven goals, including what proved to be the game-winner with 1:48 on the clock.  Schaefer added three goals, while Whitaker and Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.) chipped in two goals a piece.  Defensively, Katie Saylor (San Diego, Calif.) tallied three ground balls for Wellesley while Nicole Labbee (Florence, Mass.) and Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) each added two.  Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio) recorded four draw controls while Whitaker and Geller added three each.

Wellesley takes the field again on Sunday, April 20, at 1:30pm, when they host Trinity College.  The Warriors return to action on Saturday, April 19, at 1:00pm, when they travel to New Hampshire for a conference game at Keene State.
