Whitaker Nets Seven in Wellesley Lacrosse Win over Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Sophomore attack Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va./Langley) piled up seven goals to propel the Wellesley College women’s lacrosse team to a convincing 17-7 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. It was the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both squads.

The Blue also received a boost from sophomore midfielder Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley), who recorded four goals and an assist. First year attack Briana Roberge (Bow, N.H./Bow) netted a hat trick, while senior midfielder Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added one goal and a helper.

Mount Holyoke was paced by sophomore midfielder Peggy Wefald and senior attacker Danielle Babcock , who each found the net twice. Junior midfielder Ava Gottschall , sophomore midfielder Caroline Schnell and first year attacker Nuala Nissen chipped in with one goal apiece for the Lyons.

Gottschall scored at the 26:09 mark to give Mount Holyoke an early 1-0 edge. From there it was all Wellesley. The Blue erupted for ten straight goals and opened up a 12-3 cushion at the intermission. Whitaker led the charge with five tallies during the rally.

Two more goals by Whitaker put Wellesley in front 14-3 in the early stages of the second half. Wefald answered with her second goal of the contest at the 23:53 mark, making the score 14-4. The teams then alternated goals down the stretch.

Junior goalkeeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made eight saves en route to her fifth win of the season for the Blue. Sophomore Mimi Henry got the start between the pipes for the Lyons. She stopped three shots before giving way to classmate Gabriela Cabido Carr, who finished with five saves.                                                                                          

Mount Holyoke (1-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Springfield College for a league tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m. Wellesley (5-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) will play its third of four straight road games on Thursday, when it visits Bowdoin College at 6:30 p.m.
