Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to MIT, 9-6

WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT first year goalkeeper Monique Squiers (Grosse Pointe Shores, MI) racked up 7 saves in the second half as the Engineers defeated host Wellesley College, 9-6 in the regular season finale for both teams.  Squiers held Wellesley scoreless for over 21 minutes in the second half.

The win improves MIT to 4-7 on the season with a 3-3 mark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) while Wellesley falls to 8-7 with an identical 3-3 record in NEWMAC play.

Wellesley scored first with a goal from Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) just under two minutes after the whistle.  MIT answered back with a score from Laura Watson (Bethpage, NY) at 26:43 to knot the game at 1-1.

After six minutes of scoreless play, Wellesley's Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) broke through with a free position goal at 20:43.  The Blue's Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) followed with a score at 19:11 to push the Wellesley lead to 3-1.

MIT then went on a 4-0 run off of three goals from Samantha O'Keefe (Carlisle, MA) and another from Watson.  The run gave the Engineers a 5-3 lead with 2:21 to play in the first half.  Wellesley added a score from Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) with 11 seconds to play but MIT went into halftime with a 5-4 advantage.

In the second half, MIT's Watson scored first off of an assist from O'Keefe at 24:12. Wellesley's Geller followed that, scoring her second of the game at 23:42, to set the score to 6-5.  However, the second half belonged to MIT and Squiers. The goalkeeper stopped seven of nine shots while MIT's Watson and O'Keefe each added scores to give the Engineers an 8-5 lead with 11 minutes to play.

Wellesley and MIT eached scored once more to end the game with a 9-6 final in favor of MIT.

The Engineer's got four goals each from Watson and O'Keefe while Stephanie Leger also added a score for MIT.  Defensively, Watson and Laura Rodda (Acton, MA) each grabbed six ground balls while Watson also added five draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Squiers finished the game with 11 saves in goal.

For Wellesley, Geller added two goals while Loretta White (Northampton, MA), Evans, Whitaker and Morrow each added a goal.  Geller also added five caused turnovers.  In goal for the Blue, Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) saved 10 shots.

Wellesley and MIT will await tiebreaker procedures for seedings in the upcoming NEWMAC playoffs. Babson College has earned the top seed with Springfield grabbing the second seed. Wellesley, MIT and Wheaton are tied for the third seed while Mount Holyoke and Smith round out the playoff teams.
