Whitaker Nets Five in Wellesley Lacrosse Win Over Smith

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) scored five goals as the Wellesley College lacrosse team defeated Smith College 11-4 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up.
Pioneer's junior Blair Rapalyea put Smith on the board just one minute into the game, but Wellesley put together a 8-1 run over the remainder of the half, taking a 8-2 lead into the break. Leading the way for Wellesley were Whitaker who score four times, including three straight goals at the end of the half. Haley Geller (Berkely, CA) added two goals in the first half for the Blue, while Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) and Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, NY) each scored once.
Smith first year Caitlin Kennedy scored at the 20 minute mark for the first goal of the second half but Wellesley's Evans, Geller and Whitaker responded with three consecutive goals to increase the Wellesley lead to 11-3. Smith scored once more to set the final to 11-4 in favor of the Blue.
Wellesley keeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) picked up the win as she made four saves and allowed just four goals while Sara Smith took the loss for the Pioneers.
The win improved Wellesley to 6-3 overall, 2-0 in the NEWMAC while Smith fell to 2-5, 0-2.
Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Wheaton College for a 4:30pm NEWMAC competition.
