Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to #12 Trinity College

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College lacrosse team mounted a late rally, but it wasn't enough as the Blue fell 14-10 to the 12th-ranked Bantams of Trinity College. Wellesley falls to 8-6 on the season while Trinity improves to 8-5.

Wellesley outscored Trinity 5-0 over the last 14 minutes of play, but the nationally-ranked Bantams had already given themselves a comfortable lead and took the contest, 14-10.

The Blue got on the board first, with a goal from senior captain Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) two minutes and 30 seconds into the game. Wellesley's Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) connected with the net after a perfect pass from Briana Roberge (Bow, NH) to push the Wellesley lead to 2-0 with 33:37 to play.

Trinity answered back with three straight scores, two from Alisen Urquhart (Redding, CT) and one from Christy Bradley (Wellesley, MA) which gave the Bantams a 3-2 advantage with 14:34 remaining.

Wellesley's Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) scored at the 12-minute mark to knot the score at 3-3 but Trinity got two goals from C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, MA) and one from Anne Cook (Washington, DC) to close the first half with a 6-3 lead.

The Blue opened the second half with a goal from Geller just 30 seconds into play to cut the lead back down to two at 6-4.  However, Trinity used a 6-0 run over the next 10 minutes of play to take a 12-4 lead.  Yanofsky added three goals in the run while Jennifer Calver (Barnard, VT), Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, MA) and Sarah Remes (Silver Spring, MD) each scored once.

At 18:32, Wellesley broke through with a goal from Molly Morrow (Bow, NH), but Trinity's Remes and Kristina Scontras (Cape Elizabeth, ME) each scored to push the lead back up to 14-5 in favor of the Bantams with 14:43 to play.

Wellesley mounted an impressive comeback over the remaining 14 minutes.  Evans converted a free position shot at 9:59 which was followed by two goals from Whitaker that set the score to 14-8 with eight minutes to play.  Geller added her third goal of the game, unassisted at the 3:23 mark while Whitaker scored her fourth of the contest to set the score at 14-10 with 2:59 to play.  However, Trinity earned posession on the ensuing draw control and held the ball for the final three minutes of the game.

In goal for Trinity, Michelle Smith finished with nine saves.  Leading the way for the Bantams' offense was Yanofsky who totaled five goals and Urquhart and Remes who each added two scores in the win.  Defensively, Scontras caused three turnovers and recorded three ground balls and three draw controls.

Wellesley's Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY) saved eight shots for the Blue, including five in the second half.  Whitaker led all Wellesler scorers with four goals while Geller finished with three.  Elizabeth Hays (Roswell, GA), Evans and Geller each added three draw controls while Alexis Fischer (Orinda, CA) caused three turnovers.

Trinity will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 26, with an 11:00am match against Connecticut College at home.  Wellesley will also end the regular season on Saturday with a 1:00pm conference game against MIT.
