Wellesley Lacrosse Defeats University of New England

WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley lacrosse used a quick start to down the University of New England 15-3 this afternoon at Wellesley College. The win lifts the Blue to 4-1 on the season. The Nor'Easters drop to 2-3.
Wellesley struck at the 27:58 mark in the first half, when Halley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) broke away for her first goal of the game. The Blue scored twice more in the next 26 seconds, as Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.) found the back of the net and Geller added her second goal, to take a 3-0 lead with 27:31 remaining. The Blue then stretched the lead to 10-0, with three more goals from Geller, two from Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) and one each from Briana Roberge (Bow, N.H.) and Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, Md.).
Meanwhile, the Wellesley defense stifled the Nor'Easter attack, holding UNE to just one goal in the period, when Ashley MacDonald (Billerica, Mass.) scored at the 7:32 mark, on an assist from Ginny Lee (York, Maine).
Entering the second half with a 10-1 lead, the Blue once again scored first, when Roberge netted her second goal of the day with 20:21 remaining. Carlie Brigham (Derry, N.H.) answered for the Nor'Easters with a free position goal at the 17:38 mark. But Wellesley continued to dominate play, as Roberge put two more balls in the back of the net, and Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, N.Y.) added two goals as well. Sam Robinson (Loudon, N.H.) scored for UNE in the final minutes of the game for final score of 15-3.
For the Nor'Easters, MacDonald, Brigham, and Robinson had one goal each. Lee tallied one assist, four ground balls and two draw controls. McDonald added four draw controls and one ground ball, while Brigham chipped in five ground balls and two caused turnovers. In goal for UNE, Tara Geraghty (Barrington, R.I.) tallied four saves in the first half, while Jackie Price (Billerica, Mass.) picked up nine saves in the second period.
For the Blue, Geller had another strong performance, notching five goals, one assist, two ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Roberge tallied four goals and two ground balls, while Whitaker and Schaefer chipped in two goals each. Defensively, Loretta White (Northampton, Mass.) had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) and Katie Bourque (Penacock, N.H.) each added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. In the net for the Blue, Kristin Jaroncyzk (Manhasset, NY) talied five saves.
UNE will travel to Roger Williams on Tuesday, March 25, for 3:30 p.m. game. Wellesley takes its Spring Break trip to Florida, facing SUNY Fredonia on Wednesday, March 26, at 9:00 a.m.
