Whitaker, White Lead Wellesley Lacrosse Over Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College sophomores Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) and Loretta White (Northampton, MA) combined for nine goals as the Blue lacrosse team downed Wheaton College, 13-5 in a Tuesday afternoon New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.
The win improves Wellesley to 7-3 overall and kept them a perfect 3-0 in conference play. Wheaton falls to 5-7 on the season with a 1-3 mark in the NEWMAC.
The Blue struck first with a goal from first-year Briana Roberge (Bow, NH) just :50 seconds into the game. After a Wellesley miscue, Wheaton's Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD) scored unassisted to knot the game at 1-1 with 27:49 still to play.
Backed by two goals from White, and one each from Whitaker and Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA), the Blue put together a 4-0 run to take a 5-1 lead with 22 minutes left in the half. However, the Lyons answered with back-to-back scores from Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH) and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD) to cut the Wellesley lead to 5-3 at the 13-minute mark.
With 12:17 left in the half, Whitaker converted a free position shot to set the score at 6-3 in favor of the Blue. Seven minutes later, White netted her third score of the game, also on a free-position shot, which increased the Wellesley lead to 7-3.
Wheaton's Sara Dimick added a score for the Lyons with two minutes to play that narrowed the Wellesley halftime lead to 7-4.
The second half belonged to Wellesley as the Blue scored three goals in the first seven minutes to push the lead to 10-4. Dimick scored for the Lyons at 19:34 but it was the last time that the Wheaton offense would connect with the net for the rest of the game. The Blue closed out the contest with three more scores that set the final to 13-5 in favor of Wellesley.
Whitaker led all scorers with five goals for the Blue while White added a career-high four goals. Geller finished the game with two scores while Amber Evans (Worthington, OH) and Roberge each added a goal. Evans and Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) recorded assists for Wellesley.
Defensively for Wellesley, Dee Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) had three ground balls apiece while Garrahan added three caused turnovers. White led the team with three draw controls.
For Wheaton, Dimick scored twice while Williams, Sherwin and Jurczak each scored once. Bridget Thornton added an assist for the Lyons.
Between the pipes, Kristin Jaroncyzk (Manhasset, NY) made nine saves for Wellesley while Wheaton's Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME) stopped 12 shots.
Up next for Wheaton, the Lyons will battle NEWMAC foe MIT at home on Tuesday, April 15th at 5:00pm. Wellesley will be in action on Saturday when the Blue host Springfield at 1:00pm.
